We can’t stress enough how important a good, strong team is when looking for a home to buy. Working with a knowledgeable real estate agent is the key to a smooth, stress-free, successful home buying experience. Why? There are so many layers to finding the right home: from determining a healthy budget, to scoping out the best properties that fit your criteria, to negotiating the best deal for you — you need an agent who can do it all and do it well. So how do you know which agent is going to put in the best work for you? We’ll tell you in this article!
1. Ask friends and family for recommendations.
Odds are, friends and family members have worked with real estate agents and can either recommend someone for you or at the very least tell you who to avoid. This is probably the number one way people find agents, as most people trust the opinions of the people closest to them.
When probing your friends and family for real estate agent recommendations, here are some follow-up questions to ask:
- What did you like about your experience with this agent?
- Did this agent seem knowledgeable and trustworthy?
- Was this agent responsive and engaged?
- Was there anything you didn’t like about working with this agent?
These will help you get a better idea of what working with this agent is like. However, be wary that just because an agent was “fun” or “nice” to work with, doesn’t mean they were the best at their job. Ideally, you’ll find an agent who is all of these things and more!
2. Look online.
When in doubt, there’s always the old fashioned way: searching online. If you do a search for “real estate agents in [your city]”, you’ll likely get tons of results. You can narrow this down by searching specifically for agents who specialize in finding homes in your desired purchase area.
Make sure you read the reviews for the agents you are looking at. From the 5-star reviews to the 1-star, pour over every detail. Of course, even the best realtors will have negative reviews, so keep that in mind. However, unless there’s a clear pattern in the negative reviews, lean towards the positive or neutral ones.
3. Industry referrals.
Another way to get connected to a real estate agent is to ask your trusted lender or another industry professional to recommend someone to you. Typically the best of the best real estate agents will have solid relationships with other industry professionals due to their experience and volume of sales, both of which indicate expertise and skill.
We work with some of the best real estate agents across the country. If you choose to work with us, we can get you connected with agents who will work around the clock to get you the best deal on your dream home.
4. Try an agent matching service.
Realtor matching services like the one at Realtor.com can offer a great start to your search. These typically work by taking certain parameters like location, budget, time frame, etc. to match you with agents that fit your criteria. However, the downside of these services is that you often have to put in your contact information in order to get your results, which allows you to be contacted by agents you may not want to work with.
There are so many real estate agents out there, so we understand this process can be overwhelming. But we promise, putting the forethought and a little bit of work in at the beginning will make a huge difference with your buying experience.
